Life is sometimes like one of those bouncy balls you pay a quarter for. You think if you throw it at the wall at just the right angle, it will bounce from the door frame to the chair, then over to the ceiling, and back in your hand. Of course it doesn’t work that way, the ball will most likely hit some cockeyed angle, come back and hit you square in the face. We we are in love with our life and all its cockeyed angles, they are what keep us on our feet. This year, by far, has been the quickest year. With a family of four kids things are constantly changing and no amount of phone calls or Facebook status can keep you updated on the comings and goings of our exploits but here are the highlights that should get you back up to speed.
Fiona (18 months). Finn has changed the most this year mostly by default cause she turned one. She has come from rolling over to running all within the last twelve months. This kid has mastered the art of hugging. She wraps her small pudgy arms so tight around your neck and nestles her face in the curve of your neck like a perfectly formed puzzle piece.
Asher, at three years, has come to know his calling in life. To be the most awesome boy in the world. He loves running (as I type this he has run by twice, seriously twice). He loves superheros of all kinds. He is really good at making a game out of thin air and when you listen he has profound things to say. He is a fan of outside and will spend hours in the sandbox. Above all Asher loves his Dad (but not as much as his dad loves him).
Cecily is our six year old rockstar. She is already writing songs and sings them every moment she gets the chance. She loves her puppies and taking her time to smell the flowers. Cecily is in our life as a reminder to slow the heck down and enjoy the miracle of the bigger picture. She is kind and has so many friends (most are boys who keep proposing though)...hhhmmm... Recently, Cecily decided to help sick kids by donating her hair to Locks of Love. She looks way too grown up in her new do.
Jocelyn is 8, and she is great! Joc is teetering between being a kid and a more grown up kid. For her birthday this year she asked for a desk so she could have a dedicated space to work on her writing. Along with being a writer she also wants to be a pilot and a teacher. For now I am just glad that she still plays with Barbies, I hope she is never too old to play with her Barbies.
For Chris and Kate this year has been about realizing that life is too short not to take some calculated risks. We have come to the conclusion that life will continue whether we sit or run, so we chose to run. We choose to come back to Arizona to regroup with the support of friends and family. We both graduated from college; Kate in Human Resources and Chris in Psychology. Chris also started his masters degree in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology and should be finished with that degree by next years Christmas letter and just in time to start on his PhD.
Another risk we took was to go to work for ourselves. Best gig ever. Katie has amazing talent for creating invitations, announcements, and cards (as you can tell by our Christmas card) so I came home from the 9 to 5 to help. Now we work a 12 to 12 style day and life couldn’t be better. Kate and I also made the choice to be more healthy and stop being fat. So we changed the way we eat and move and together have lost just about 100 lbs and we are not looking back.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.” We are so glad that we have had 2011 to conduct some serious experiments cause every now and again when you toss the ball it goes exactly where you want it.
From our Crew to yours a huge freaking Merry Christmas and an awesome new year!
